The community of Madrid held since Monday until November 18 12th week science with the aim of bringing science and technology to citizens through more than 900 free activities that will take place in 40 municipalities in the region, reported Sunday the regional Executive in a press release.

This initiative represents the largest cultural offer of science and technology of the year and one of the most important scientific meetings in Europe, which this year joins in the celebration of the national year of neuroscience and the international year of sustainable energy for everyone.
Participate in a gymkhana to the latest advances in renewable energy, visit the information centre in the Consejo de Seguridad Nuclear, learn secret message encoding techniques, the new trends in the management of commercial robots, attend the live broadcast of an experiment via Twitter or know what effects that produces music in the brain are some of the activities that locals may participate during the 12th week of science.
Under the slogan ‘Understand and improve the world’, 12th week of science wants to emphasize the importance of science as an engine of change to achieve a better future for society. This edition will cover six main thematic areas: ‘The city of tomorrow, heritage and citizenship’, ‘Quality of life, health and power’, ‘energy, environment and sustainable development’, ‘space, territory and transport’, ‘Information and communication society’ and ‘Knowledge Bases’.
ACTIVITIES FOR ALL
For two weeks, Madrid citizens may attend and participate in the more than 900 scheduled activities, all free, that will take place in the community of Madrid. Among them will be 199 days of open doors and guided visits, 257 roundtables and conferences, 340 courses and workshops, 57 exhibitions and 58 didactic itineraries and excursions.
It is expected that this year will exceed the number of 225,000 visitors. In this edition of 3,000 scientists and around 600 agencies and collaborating institutions from research centres, collaborate more to associations citizens and NGOs, through public authorities, all universities in Madrid, foundations, museums, hospitals and various scientific associations and companies.
On the agenda of this edition include guided tours as the historical collection of the Instituto San Isidro, or Cabinet of technical documentation of the Prado Museum. Excursions will be made as the of the Salinas of Espartinas, one of the oldest farms in Western Europe, and you may know the Torrelaguna hydroelectric and dam of El Atazar, where will explain how the supply of water and the hydroelectric development of Madrid is produced.
Topics will also address such as the development of smart materials for a sustainable building, the impact of social networks on the consumer or the energy picture of the European Union.

12Th week of science offers its programming through the www.madrimasd.org/semanaciencia website. It will be structured into 7 sections and will have a search engine that will locate events by date, location, subject area, type of activity or public, organizer and discipline. You can also download the Guide and refer to the capacity of the activities that require previous appointment.
In turn, carried out a communication campaign with presence in social networks and other Internet sites, advertisements in press, radio and banners, and the distribution of 50,000 activity guides in exchangers, banks, universities, libraries, senior centers and municipal boards, among others.
